What is Griddle?
Griddle is a crossword puzzle app by Cryptology. It offers a shared free daily crossword, a larger 21x21 Sunday puzzle, and additional crosswords generated locally from over 100,000 original clues. Griddle works offline, is account-free, and keeps solving ad-free. Free users receive the shared daily crossword plus three additional puzzles per day. Griddle Pro provides unlimited on-demand puzzles, on-demand Large grids, and ad-free play. Griddle is available for iOS and Android.

A daily crossword, the same for everyone
Every day brings one new crossword, and every player gets the same puzzle on the same date. It is a Standard 15x15 grid Monday through Saturday and a Large 21x21 grid on Sunday, both at Medium difficulty.
The daily is free for every player, the big Sunday grid included, and it comes on top of your three free puzzles: after you play it, all three are still yours.
Griddle builds each daily on your device from its date, so it is ready whether you are online or offline.
Finish a puzzle each day to build a streak. Any finished puzzle counts toward it, the daily or any other. Turn on reminders if you like; Griddle sends at most one a day, in the evening.

Free players get three Mini or Standard puzzles a day on top of the daily, and the count starts over at midnight. A puzzle you have started stays ready to finish any time.
Each puzzle is generated on your device from over 100,000 original clues. Griddle rotates the clues for each answer, so a familiar answer often comes back with a different clue.
Play offline, anywhere
Every puzzle plays offline, from the daily to a Large grid. Solve on a plane, on the subway, or anywhere your signal drops.
Two things need an internet connection: buying or restoring Griddle Pro, and the ads in the free version. Your puzzles, progress, and stats are saved on your device.
Ad-free while you solve
In the free version, an ad may appear after you finish a puzzle. While you solve, the grid is all yours.
Griddle Pro removes ads from the whole app.
Difficulty and solving tools
Choose Easy, Medium, or Hard for each new puzzle. Easy uses the most familiar clues, Medium adds trickier ones, and Hard draws on every clue.
Check
Check a letter, a word, or the whole puzzle. Wrong letters turn red, and correct ones get a small tick.
Reveal
Reveal a letter, a word, or the whole puzzle whenever you want a hand.
Undo and pencil
Undo and redo any entry, and write in pencil when you are trying out a guess.
Timer
The timer counts your solving time and pauses when you leave the puzzle. Hide it in Settings if you prefer.
Automatic saving
Your progress saves as you play, so you can pick up exactly where you left off.
Dark mode and tablet layout
Switch on dark mode in Settings. On a tablet, the full clue list sits beside the grid.

Does Griddle work offline?
Yes. Every puzzle plays offline, the daily crossword included. Buying or restoring Griddle Pro uses an internet connection, and so do ads in the free version.
Is the daily crossword free, and does it count toward the three free puzzles?
Yes, the daily crossword is free for everyone, Sunday’s Large 21x21 included. It is separate from your three free puzzles, so playing it leaves all three ready for later.
Do I need an account?
Griddle is account-free. Download it and start solving; your progress, stats, and streaks are saved on your device.
How big are the puzzles?
Mini puzzles are 9x9, Standard puzzles are 15x15, and Large puzzles are 21x21. The daily crossword is a Standard grid Monday through Saturday and a Large grid on Sunday.
Are there ads?
In the free version, an ad may appear after you finish a puzzle, and the grid stays ad-free while you solve. Griddle Pro removes all ads.
What does Griddle Pro add?
Griddle Pro is an optional subscription, monthly or yearly, that adds unlimited puzzles, Large grids on demand, and ad-free play. Current prices are shown in the App Store and on Google Play.
Where do the clues come from?
Every clue is original, written for Griddle, and over 100,000 of them come with the app. Each clue is rated Easy, Medium, or Hard, and a puzzle uses the clues at or below the difficulty you choose.

Manage your subscription
To change or cancel your plan on iOS, open the Settings app, tap your name, then tap Subscriptions. On Android, open the Google Play app, tap your profile icon, then tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.

You can ask us to delete the data held for your installation. The privacy policy explains which details help us find it.
